Miro player for Linux

It seems that as installed from Fedora 7 channel, Miro will not play video content back. Here’s a quick fix to get things up and running quickly.

First of all, make sure and subscribe to the Livna repo as this will make life much easier. Yeah, these probably violate lots of mundane and obvious patents in the USA and are really intended for foreign usage, but I could care less use them anyway. I think US patent law is very broken anyway, especially in regards to vague software patents. It is sad that there will never be a qualified jury allowed to hear these cases. Sorry, but you just can’t expect bring a group of 12 simpletons to a level of knowledge that will allow them to actually understand what is going on in the timeframe of the typical trial. Hell, most judges aren’t qualified either…but I digress…

Secondly, you need to edit VideoDisplay.py is provided by Miro. Comment out the xine line and uncomment the gstreamer line. Gstreamer is a great player, but by default install it cannot play much. Issue the following command and you’ll be able to play most formats back.

yum install gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-ugly

Now (re)start miro player and all should be well. Make sure you don’t index your home directory as the default save-to directory dialog is sorta messed up and will default to your home directory if you’re not careful. If you change this, make sure you’re not migrating your homedir to another directory as this happened to me.
